I first fell in love with Disney when I was a little girl. My very first Halloween costume was Minnie Mouse. Now I have no actual memories of that Halloween or the costume, but I was told by my mom that she called me “Mindy Mouse” the entire time I was dressed up for the holiday. Even though I don’t actually remember that, I like to think it was the start of a lifelong love for Disney.
Growing up I loved watching Disney movies. As a very small child (pre-elementary school) my favorites were Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and The Sword in the Stone. As I got a tiny bit older I added The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and, you know, all the great movies of that time period to the list of favorites. The list has only grown from there. If you were to ask me today what my all time favorite Disney movie is I don’t know if I can actually pick. I love most of them. There are a few that I can’t get into though. If you want to know what Disney movies I DON’T love let me know and maybe I’ll write a post about it.
Disney movies aren’t the only aspect of Disney that I am crazy about. I also love love love Walt Disney World. I have not (yet!) been to Disneyland but I like to think just because I haven’t left the east coast of the USA that doesn’t make me any less qualified to call myself a Disney Parks obsessed adult. Because yeah, I still love and go to Disney World, even without kids. I actually think it might be better because I don’t have kids. I can do whatever the heck I want when I go to the parks and don’t have to worry about teenie ones getting tired or cranky or not being tall enough to ride a ride or what have you. It is honestly pretty great.
My first trip to Disney World I only remember through photographs. I was around a year old I think. Maybe a little less or a little more but the point is I was too young to really have any memories of the trip. My next trip is the one that I think instilled a love for the parks in me. I don’t really remember this trip either. I was three or four at the time and the only true memory I can recall is being on my dad’s shoulders and eating a bomb pop that was dripping into his hair. All other memories of this trip are actually memories of watching the video my grandpa recorded while we were there. I LOVED watching the video of this trip. I watched it over and over again as a child and am actually really sad that I don’t know if anyone still has a copy of it, because I would love to be able to rewatch it today. As a family we went two more times, once when I was in 4th grade, and one more time when I was around 19. This trip was not too long after my mom had passed away and it had been so many years since the trip prior, it was sort of like experiencing it all over again. I fell in love with Walt Disney World once again on this trip and my love has only grown since then.
In 2006 I decided to go to Florida and participate in the Disney College Program. I ended up working as an attractions cast member at Splash Mountain in Magic Kingdom. This experience was one of the best of my life. I’m not an especially outgoing person and I tend to get anxious really easily, so there were definitely times it was a struggle for me, but I wouldn’t change the experience at all. By the time my program ended I was completely obsessed.
Today I go to Disney World once every few years (it’s unfortunately expensive so it’s hard to go as often as I wish I could!) and in between trips I get my Disney fix wherever I can. I stalk Disney related hashtags on Instagram (#disneystyle, #disneyfood, and #disneyworld are some obvious favorites), watch Disney YouTubers, read Disney news sites, and now, have my own Disney website to keep up to date!
