Learn From My Disney World Beauty Blunders- Part 2: Makeup

If you haven’t read it yet, take a look at Part 1 in this series focusing on skin and hair then hop on back to read this part where I talk about makeup. Go ahead, I’ll wait…

Okay all set? Perfect! So today I am going to talk about makeup and what I did wrong with my makeup on the last trip. I’ll let you know what I plan on doing whenever I next get to the parks that will hopefully work out much better!

Let’s start with the face

Face SPF

Self explanatory. You need to protect your skin so before applying any of your makeup layer on your SPF! I’m not going to start recommending brands I just need to make sure you are using SPF on your face. Do it.

Face Primer

My favorite moisturizing primer is the FAB Coconut Skin Smoothie primer. Photo from sephora.com

Last time I went to WDW I brought my favorite face primer with me, the First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer. This is still my favorite primer and I would probably bring it again HOWEVER, and that is a big however, I’d bring a second more gripping primer as well.

The FAB primer is, well fab, and really good at moisturizing which I definitely need when in Florida, but it doesn’t really grip your makeup and make it last longer. I think in addition to this primer I would also bring a less emollient primer that will do a better job at extending the wear of my face makeup. I’m not entirely sure which I would bring but I would want it to be something that is going to be tacky and help my makeup last all day. Or as close to all day as possible. The J.ONE Jelly Pack Multi-Functional Gel Primer might be a good option as it is a stickier primer that really grips your makeup keeping it looking fresh longer.

My goal with this would be to lay down my FAB moisturizing primer first, and use the J.ONE primer over it in the areas I tend to get oily quickest. Areas like my nose, forehead, and chin. I have not layered these two primers together before, so I’ll need to do some testing first, but I often layer my Benefit Porefessional over the FAB primer on my nose to help fill in my pores in that area and those two primers layer really well, so I hope the J.ONE would also layer over the FAB primer well.

Foundation

I really love my Physician’s Formula The Healthy Foundation. It is what I brought with me to Walt Disney World on my last trip. My problem with this was that it didn’t really last. In fact it isn’t a long wearing foundation even in cool weather so I’m not sure what I was thinking. Instead I will be opting for a powder foundation.

I know not everyone likes powder foundations. They get a bad reputation for looking too matte, too fake, and not skin like enough. People don’t think they cover as well as liquid foundations. There are a multitude of excuses people make for avoiding powder foundations. Those people haven’t tried the Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Blurring Powder Foundation.

Yes, it sounds like it is going to be all of the things I said people don’t like about powder foundation but I promise you it is amazing. It isn’t too matte, the coverage is INCREDIBLE, and the best part? IT. LASTS.ALL.DAY. Seriously. When I wear this powder foundation the only time I need to touch up is when I blow my nose. (I have allergies so this is something I am used to.) I don’t like matte foundations as a rule so that should tell you this is not too matte! Please if you want a long lasting powder foundation try this. At least go to a Sephora and swatch it before ruling it out completely.

Concealer

The Shape Tape concealer from Tarte is popular for good reason! Photo from tarte.com

I don’t think I made too big an error in judgement with my concealer choice on my last trip. I brought the Tarte ShapeTape Concealer which I know is everyone and their mom’s favorite concealer. It is with good reason though. I will admit it isn’t currently my go to everyday concealer (I’ve been loving the First Aid Beauty Bendy Avocado Concealer a ton lately) but it is a very high coverage concealer that isn’t too emollient so it lasts a long time.

That said, I won’t be bringing this concealer next time I go to Florida. I am so tired every morning when I am on vacation and the Make Up Forever powder foundation gives me such good coverage I don’t feel like a concealer is even necessary. The idea of being able to skip a step when I am that exhausted sounds great to me. If you want to have a concealer though the Shape Tape is a great choice.

Bronzer

This is a case of sticking with what you love. Last trip I brought the Physician’s Formula Murumuru Butter Bronzer. Next trip I will be bringing the Physician’s Formula Murumuru Butter Bronzer. It is my go to not too light not too dark bronzer and the one I use the most from my collection. Plus it smells like vacation. If you have a bronzer that looks great on you, bring it!

Blush

The Kathleen Lights x Colourpop blush collaboration in the shade Lunar Has It is a personal favorite. Photo from colourpop.com

I honestly don’t remember what blush I brought with me last trip. Terrible I know. I however know what blush I will be bringing next time. The ColourPop Pressed Powder Blushes are gorgeous, very pigmented, and easily blendable blushes and I’ve become obsessed. They are also LONG LASTING. That right there is the key my friends.

I even know what shade I would bring. Lunar Has It is a beautiful natural blush shade that is nice and warm and pairs beautifully with the PH Butter Bronzer. It is one of those shades that makes me feel like I could trick someone into thinking I have a bronzey natural glow. Like I got a nice healthy tan when I really didn’t.

Anyway, this blush is one of the collab blushes created by Kathleen Lights with Colourpop and I really feel like this blush was created just for me, haha. I love all of the Colourpop blushes I have tried but this one won my heart. <3

Other long lasting blush formulas that I can recommend would be the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blushes and any of the blushes from theBalm.

Highlight

Oh boy this category is going to be one of the most difficult to make a recommendation in. Highlight is such a personal thing. Some people want to be able to be seen from outer space while other want something much more natural. What will appeal to you is going to be very very personal.

I like both the “holy smokes your highlight just blinded me!” highlight look and the “oh you look so naturally radiant today!” highlight look. For a trip to Disney though where I’m going to be going less glam and more natural, the slightly more subtle highlight is my go to. Last trip I brought my Mary-Lou Manizer highlight from theBalm and I still love love love this highlight so depending on my mood, I might throw this one into my bag next trip, but I think I would be even more likely to bring the Essence Pure Nude Highlighter. This is one of those very subtle highlights that looks more like a natural glow than anything. Plus it’s cheap! As in inexpensive not as in low quality. I will never recommend a low quality product to you regardless of price.

If you want a more KABAM! in-your-face highlight might I suggest checking out the Makeup Geek Highlighters? I only have the shade Luster but it’s gorgeous and very high impact.

Setting Spray

Make sure sure you have a long lasting setting spray like this one! Photo from milanicosmetics.com

The real key to making your face makeup last through the day at Disney is a nice long lasting setting spray. Last trip I brought the Pixi Makeup Fixing Mist and I do love this spray, even if the nozzle is a bit weird on me sometimes and doesn’t like to work. However, it is better at making me look less powdery and more dewy, and not as great at making my makeup last.

For a long lasting setting spray I am going to recommend the Milani Make It Last Setting Spray. It is a nice long lasting setting spray and not necessarily my go to for day to day, but if I want to make sure my makeup isn’t going anywhere I know I can trust this guy.

Now onto the eyes (and brows)

Eye Primer

For eye primer I pretty much always use the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion and I’ll probably continue to use it. Mostly because I have so many “deluxe sample” tubes of it that I don’t ever need to buy eye primer. That doesn’t mean it is my favorite eye primer though.

My favorite eye primer is the Smashbox 24 Hour Shadow Primer but the only two tubes I have had both had the seam split on me and so much primer was wasted. That is the only reason I wouldn’t bring that primer to Disney World. I wouldn’t want to risk the seam splitting when I don’t have a backup primer to use. If you are braver than me though and willing to take the risk, bring the Smashbox.

If you don’t usually use an eye primer (I pretty much always do) I suggest you at least use it in Disney. It’ll help your eyeshadows to last and limit creasing.

Eyeshadow

This one is very personal. Depending on how bold you want your eye to be, and how much time you want to spend getting ready, you may want something totally different than me. My one consistent recommendation though is bring powder shadows (or cream to powder shadows) and try to avoid a lot of glittery shades unless you want to use a glitter glue primer.

Cream and liquid shadows that stay more dewy or shimmery are more prone to creasing and moving around throughout the day. Glitter “shadows” (using quotes because TECHNICALLY you’re not supposed to use glitter on your eyes so they can’t TECHNICALLY call them eyeshadows) can result in glitter ending up in your eyes or all over your face.

Wattles is my favorite single shadow for a one and done eye look. Photo from colourpop.com

Last trip I brought the Too Faced Sugar Cookie palette. It’s a cute little palette and it smells nice, but the shadows are pretty light overall. I brought it because it was a tiny cute palette with neutral shades and I was always decently happy with the result. However, I think next time I will bring a shade (yup probably just one) that is just a smidge deeper for a single shadow look.

I’ve been a big fan of single shadow looks lately because again, I’m lazy, haha. I want fast and easy when I’m trying to get ready in a hurry. My favorite shadow for a single shadow look EVER is the Colourpop Super Shock Shadow in Wattles. If you’re not familiar with the super shock shadow formula it is a very soft, somewhat wet feeling product that feels almost like a combination between a cream and a powder. The thing I love though is that they set and don’t move around throughout the day. Wattles will probably be my shadow of choice for a future Walt Disney World vacation.

Eyeliner

Okay so I should start off by saying at Disney I’m doing the bare minimum as far as eyeliner. The only eyeliner I am doing is tightlining my upper lash line with a black waterproof liner, and putting a nude liner in my waterline. My black liner of choice for tightlining is the Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in Blackest Black and my waterline liner of choice is actually not an eyeliner. I love the Wet n Wild Ultimate Brow Highlight for my waterline.

Mascara

The Covergirl Clumb Crusher Waterproof mascara never lets me down! Photo from covergirl.com

This was one of my biggest mistakes last trip. The mascara I brought with my claimed to be sweat proof, which sounds perfect right? It wasn’t. The mascara was the Tarte Lifted Sweatproof Mascara. I don’t know if they expected Orlando level sweat.

To be perfectly honest I was stupid. I brought a mascara that was pretty new to me that I had barely tested. That is the best advice I can give. Test the mascara you are bringing before you go to make sure you like how it wears throughout the day. Does it flake? Don’t bring it. Does it smudge? Don’t bring it. Bring something that stays put.

Next trip I will be bringing my tried and true Covergirl Clump Crusher Waterproof Mascara in Very Black. It hasn’t failed me yet.

Brows

This was another case of me being stupid. Doing my brows is the most difficult part of makeup application for me. Shortly prior to my last trip I had found a brow product that I was able to use quickly and be happy with the results and I still love the product for day to day wear. I brought the Chella Eyebrow Cream in Tantalizing Taupe and it is a great product but I don’t think it was the right product for the job. It sort of lasted but I think I would have been happier bringing my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Granite. I have to spend a tiny bit more time on my brows when I use this but I’m always happier with how it lasted by the end of the day.

Lips

Lip Balm

Last trip I brought a tinted lip balm as my only lip product. I love the Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balms so much and don’t really regret bringing one of these but it again didn’t really last all day. Plus it doesn’t have SPF and I really should have been using a lip balm with SPF in it. Next trip I bring the NIVEA Recovery Medicated Lip Balm with SPF 15 for my daytime lip balm, and then at night before bed I’ll use the LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask to recover any moisture lost throughout the day.

Lip Crayon

I’ve said this a million times, but when I am at Disney I don’t want to spend a ton of time getting ready so I’m likely going to be skipping a lip liner and lipstick combo. What’s the best combination of both? Lip Crayon. Colourpop has been featured pretty prominently in this post and once again I’m going to direct you to their products. The Just a Tint Lip Crayons are a really nice product and easy to apply. You will need to reapply throughout the day after eating and drinking but I don’t have a great suggestion for you where you won’t need to do that. If you have a good option that doesn’t fade or disappear when eating and drinking please let me know so I can try it out!

Lip Gloss

I didn’t bring a gloss (or lipstick, lip crayon, lip liner, etc.) last trip but I’ve been really into lip gloss lately. Provided I still am feeling the glossy lip look at the time, I’ll probably bring one with me next trip. I won’t bring it to the parks though so it will mostly just be a “way out the door” glossy look. There is unlikely to be much evidence of the gloss in photos since it won’t last. My favorite glosses are, you guessed it, from Colourpop. I’m sorry guys but the Colourpop products are just really good! I really love the Ultra Glossy Lips they create.

Yikes! Another long post but I think that is everything! What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with my product suggestions? What will you be bringing on your next Walt Disney World vacation?
